The Cope Project

Our collection of copes have been a meeting point for our collaborative output from discussions over zoom, drawing in the field and photoshoots on the moor.

This ancient very simple garment that sits on the shoulders.

The semi-circular copes are an embodiment of the circularity of time: the stone circles, the rotation of seasons, ancient time shaped by planetary orbits.

The copes are a vehicle that allows our broader perspectives on the land to unite us as a collective; we share archeological discoveries and thinking within our art practice. Fay Stevens, Dr Laura Denning, Alan Endacott, Sarah Sidders.

The pairing of the copes interprets the landscape in themes.
From the land, ‘cyan herbaria’ copes, one made in Dartmoor, the other in Somerset.
Of the land, Dartmoor copes, a layering of circles and rivers, including the newly discovered Sacred Ring by a member of the collective, Alan Endacott.
Within the land, copes drawn at ground-level perspective. Of these, one pair is observed from the smaller circle at Stanton Drew and is of the 8 stones.
